Dallas Fort Worth International Airport

DFW ran a competitive RFP for smart restroom technology and asked vendors to price more than eight different features and sensor types. TRAX won it, ran a pilot on a single pair of restrooms, and then installed the system across 163 restrooms in five terminals in five months.

One pair of restrooms. Then all 163.

DFW did not go shopping for a product. It issued a competitive RFP for smart restroom technology in 2019 and asked vendors to price more than eight separate features and sensor types: throughput counting, stall occupancy, staff monitoring, passenger digital signage, connected dispensers, connected plumbing, and a platform to manage the team and make sense of everything the sensors produced.

TRAX was shortlisted and asked to prove it on a single pair of restrooms during the evaluation period. That pilot became the whole airport. TRAX was selected as the finalist in March 2020 and installed the system across 163 restrooms in five months.

STEP 01

The Challenge

DFW is one of the busiest airports in the world and the largest hub for American Airlines. Five terminals, 163 restrooms, and passenger volume that does not pause for a cleaning schedule. At that scale the restroom is both the most visible thing in the terminal to a passenger and the hardest thing to stay in front of.

There was a second problem underneath the first. DFW does not clean its own restrooms. Several facility management providers do, working side by side across the terminals. Any system worth buying had to work for all of them at once, give each provider a real operating picture of its own contract, and still leave the airport with one view across every one of them. That is a harder requirement than it sounds, and it shaped the whole deployment.

STEP 02

The Solution

From the RFP scope, DFW selected throughput counters, stall occupancy, staff monitoring with Bluetooth beacons, passenger digital signage, connected dispensers, and Clean+Inspect. TRAX installed it across all 163 restrooms. Partway through, the work merged with two separate terminal renovation projects, and TRAX worked alongside the architecture, engineering, and construction teams for the rest of the contract period.

Clean+Inspect went out on more than 100 iPad minis mounted directly on cleaning carts across all five terminals, so the frontline works from the cart rather than from a back office. Three facility management providers use the same system. Each one sees only its own data. DFW sees all of it. The TRAX client success team still meets weekly with the airport’s Customer Experience department and terminal managers to review adoption and read what the system is reporting.

The Benefits

THE RESULT

A two-restroom pilot became 163 restrooms across five terminals in five months. The engagement runs three years with two one-year extensions, and the TRAX client success team is still in the building every week, working with DFW’s Customer Experience department and terminal managers on adoption and on what the data is telling them.
