LaGuardia Airport
TRAX has been at LaGuardia for more than five years, through a change of facility management contractor and through active terminal construction. In 2021 the license transitioned to JLL and the expansion began — 14 new restroom locations, delivered in phases, around a terminal that never stopped operating.
A five-year account that survived a change of contractor and a construction program.
LaGuardia Airport has been a TRAX Analytics client for over five years, through contracts with the integrated facility management companies maintaining janitorial operations across different terminals.
In 2021 TRAX transitioned the existing software license and deployment to JLL and began a multi-phased expansion driven by ongoing construction. The expansion brought SmartRestroom to 14 new restroom locations across the Headhouse and Concourses D, E and F. Each phase of installation and deployment took approximately three months, and all of it is actively supported and maintained by TRAX.
Two things make this account worth reading about. It outlasted a change of facility management contractor, and it expanded into a terminal that was being built around it.
The Challenge
Two kinds of continuity were at risk at once. The facility management contract changed hands, which is normally where a deployment dies — the software goes with the outgoing contractor and the new one starts over. And the terminal was under active construction, so new restroom locations were arriving in stages rather than all at once.
LGA also needed the cleaning data to be usable outside the cleaning system. An airport running a data integration program does not want another platform that only talks to itself.
The Solution
TRAX transitioned the existing software license and deployment to JLL rather than rebuilding it, and then expanded in phases that matched the construction schedule. Each phase took roughly three months across the Headhouse and Concourses D, E and F.
TRAX implemented an updated SmartRestroom platform and the Clean+Inspect mobile app for JLL, and supplied Bluetooth beacons, Bluetooth badges with gateways, the passenger feedback solution, video-based throughput counters and the associated networking equipment. Additional systems installed in the restrooms, including stall occupancy, are integrated into the platform rather than run separately.
Frontline teams receive alerts when a restroom reaches its designated threshold, have arrival and departure time and date automatically registered through the mobile app and their Bluetooth badges, and can see real-time passenger feedback for the location they are working in.
The TRAX API is provided to the data integration partner at LGA, so cleaning data can be consolidated and analyzed alongside other airport systems. TRAX provides ongoing support to LGA and JLL: system training, adoption support, technical support, automatic report generation, and regular meetings on new platform features.
What TRAX deployed
- Transition of the existing software license and deployment to JLL in 2021
- SmartRestroom expansion to 14 new restroom locations across the Headhouse and Concourses D, E and F
- Phased installation timed to construction, at approximately three months per phase
- An updated SmartRestroom platform and the Clean+Inspect mobile app for JLL
- Bluetooth beacons, Bluetooth badges with gateways, video-based throughput counters, passenger feedback and networking equipment
- Integration of additional installed systems, including stall occupancy
- The TRAX API provided to LGA's data integration partner for consolidation with other airport systems
- Ongoing training, adoption support, technical support and automatic report generation
The Benefits
- A deployment that carried across a change of facility management contractor instead of restarting
- Expansion timed to construction phases, with no pause in terminal operations
- Threshold-based alerts to the frontline team, with arrival and departure registered automatically
- Real-time passenger feedback visible to the person working the location
- Cleaning data available to the airport's own integration partner through the TRAX API
- Support that continues after go-live — training, adoption, reporting and feature updates
TRAX has supported LaGuardia for over five years and has been working with JLL since the 2021 license transition, on a three-year contract. The multi-phase expansion added 14 new restroom locations, each phase taking approximately three months, and TRAX continues to actively support and maintain the deployment.
