Mineta San José International Airport

SJC became the first California airport to earn GBAC STAR accreditation for cleanliness and safety. Behind it is a staff monitoring system that shows Flagship and the airport where crews are and how long each task takes, in real time.

Accountability that works. in both directions.

The pandemic changed what passengers expect from an airport, and it changed what airports expect from their cleaning operations. Airports around the world, SJC among them, moved quickly on disinfection protocols and on the technology behind them.

SJC implemented staff monitoring technology to improve efficiency across the airport. The system lets Flagship Airport Ambassadors and SJC track and manage teams throughout the airport, manage tasks, and keep up-to-the-minute knowledge of inventory.

The word that matters here is visibility, and it runs both ways. Supervisors can see where the work is happening, and the frontline team has an automatic record of the work it did.

STEP 01

The Challenge

Consistent disinfection at airport scale creates a measurement problem before it creates a cleaning problem. Protocols only mean something if you can show they were followed, in a terminal where the work is spread across a large footprint and moves constantly.

SJC and Flagship needed to know where crews were, what they were working on, and how long each task took — without a system that depended on someone stopping to record it.

STEP 02

The Solution

The staff monitoring system uses proximity badging that pings at certain Wi-Fi connection points around the airport. It records the badge’s location and the time spent in each area, which creates accountability and visibility for both the frontline teams and SJC operational staff.

That information is available in real time through Flagship’s Intuition software platform. The technology behind the staff monitoring system and Intuition is powered and supported by TRAX Analytics.

The system is built to improve operational efficiency and support passenger experience. For a passenger moving through SJC, the effect shows up as a consistently cleaner and safer airport, which is the only form in which any of this matters to them.

Flagship has also partnered with TRAX to bring SmartRestroom to SJC.

The Benefits

THE RESULT

In the middle of the pandemic, SJC became the first California airport to achieve global accreditation for the highest levels of cleanliness and safety, recognized by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council through the GBAC STAR Facility Accreditation Program.

“The system is easy to use and works great! We find a lot of value by tracking when employees start cleaning, disinfecting, and restocking rooms and measuring how long it takes. Even when days are slow and we have to change our cleaning time regiment, the employee tracking is very beneficial in the system.”

Abraham Regalad
Flagship Site Manager, SJC

“Our dynamic team is always seeking ways to improve the customer experience at SJC. We’re very proud of the range of improvements we have accomplished during the pandemic, and this new technology adds to a list of measures we’ve undertaken to promote the confidence our industry needs right now.”

Judy Ross
Assistant Director of Aviation, SJC
